There are places we admire, and there are places that has the power to change us and leave a mark.
Perhaps that is why some destinations become places we return to, while others remain beautiful photographs in our camera roll. What stays with us is rarely just the beautiful landscape. It is the version of ourselves that emerged while we were there.
The places we choose shape the people we become
Researchers in environmental psychology have been exploring this idea for decades. Their work suggests that our surroundings shape far more than our visual experience. They influence our attention, our stress levels, our creativity, our willingness to connect with others and even the way we remember moments.
Places are never neutral: they quietly influence the way we think, relate, rest and remember. Long before an experience begins, the environment has already started shaping it.
Every place asks something different of us. Cities often ask us to move faster. Airports ask us to think about what comes next. Offices ask us to focus. Nature, on the other hand, asks very little. It simply creates the conditions for us to pay attention: to ourselves, to the people beside us and to the world around us.
This is one of the reasons we chose Apulia for the Wild&Free Retreat.
Not because it is fashionable or because it offers extraordinary beaches or beautiful villages, although it certainly does.
We chose it because, after spending time there ourselves, we realised that Apulia has something else. In Apulia (or Puglia), it often feels as though life happens outside. Conversations continue long after the plates have been cleared. People linger instead of rushing to the next appointment. The landscape itself seems to reward slowness. Without consciously deciding to, you begin to adapt to its rhythm.
Why Wild&Free Retreat could only happen in Puglia
Modern neuroscience offers an interesting explanation for this: experiences of awe, novelty and immersion in nature have all been associated with reduced stress, increased wellbeing and stronger memory formation. We tend to remember experiences that surprise us emotionally far more vividly than those that simply entertain us.
Perhaps this is why we rarely remember every museum we visited on a trip, but never forget an unexpected conversation or a long dinner with new friends we’ve just met.
When we designed Wild&Free Retreat, we wanted every experience to feel connected to this spirit of Apulia.
Horse riding through the countryside was chosen because it invites presence rather than performance. Practising yoga outdoors reconnects us with our bodies in a way that feels inseparable from the landscape around us. Cooking together, wandering through Ostuni's white streets or Alberobello’s unique architecture, sharing local wines and long dinners under the stars are not simply activities to fill an itinerary.
They are different ways of experiencing the rhythm of a place that has been encouraging people to slow down for generations.
